    Revision

Strong study skills are essential for academic success.

They equip students with the tools to manage their time effectively, understand and retain information, and perform confidently in assessments. However, study skills are not just about preparing for exams, they support homework, coursework, projects and everyday learning. Developing effective study habits enhances understanding, reduces stress and builds confidence. Most importantly, it lays the foundation for lifelong learning and future employability.

At Hessle High School, students are supported in developing effective study skills by their subject specialist teachers, who embed revision strategies and independent learning techniques into their lessons.

At Key Stage 4, students also receive additional guidance through tutor time. Our Study Skills programme is delivered by form tutors and focusses on equipping students with practical strategies to support effective revision. A key element of the programme is metacognition, encouraging students to reflect on how they learn best. This helps students to:

    • Develop personalised revision strategies
    • Build awareness of their strengths and areas for development
    • Manage their time and resources effectively
    • Adapt their approach to improve outcomes

    Steps to Effective Revision

Students are guided through four key stages:

Step 1: Identify WHAT to revise
Use strategies such as RAG rating, prioritising topics, and checking existing knowledge to identify gaps.

Step 2: Decide HOW to revise
Select appropriate revision techniques and activities that support long-term memory and understanding.

    Step 3: APPLY revision
Complete practice questions and tests to apply knowledge and strengthen recall.

    Step 4: REVIEW revision
Reflect on what worked well, identify areas for improvement, and adjust revision strategies accordingly.
